Required Safety Training

All users are required to take safety training at the ALS User Services Office (located on the second floor in Building 6) before they may begin work at the ALS. The policies detailed in the training literature and video are designed to provide a safe work environment, protect the general public and the environment from harm, and protect property from damage and loss.

The ALS User Services Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Safety training and new user registration and are done on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon, and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. only; users arriving outside these hours should consult After-Hours Access to the ALS for information about temporary access to the facility.

The following safety forms and training must be completed before an ID Proximity Access Card, required for access to the ALS experiment floor and storage areas, is issued:

  • View the safety video, "Photons to Users: Safety at the Advanced Light Source" (15 min).

  • Read and/or sign:
ALS Procedure HP 02-01: Access to the ALS (Building 6)
    ALS Radiation Awareness Training Form
Berkeley Lab General Employee Radiation Training (GERT)
    Integrated Safety Management Handbook
    Training Documentation Sheet/Enrollment List Form

During the experiment review process, the ALS Administration reviews the ALS Experiment Form submitted by the Experimenter in Charge to determine whether additional safety precautions and/or training are required. It is the responsibility of the experiment spokesperson to ensure that all members of the team receive the proper safety training before an experiment begins.
