Facilities and Services

The ALS provides a chemistry laboratory, machine shop, electronics maintenance shop, and storage space for users. In addition, the ALS Survey and Alignment group can assist users in aligning their equipment when setting up an experiment. Unless otherwise noted, all facilities are open for use 24 hours daily. Some of these facilities require that users read pertinent ALS User Advisories or receive specialized training prior to their use, as noted below.

Chemistry Laboratory (Building 10, Room 102)
This laboratory includes a fume hood, an ultrasonic cleaner for cleaning UHV parts, and a small area for storing chemicals. Use of the chemistry lab requires special training that includes reading ALS User Advisory 11: ALS Chemistry Laboratory--Facilities and Safety Requirements. Contact Georgeanna Perdue (ext. 7407) to schedule the training, sign a training documentation sheet, and have your name placed on the list of authorized users.

Electronics Maintenance Shop (Building 80, Room 137; Ext. 5457)
In addition to supplying electronics small parts, the electronics maintenance staff is available 24 hours daily to assist users with advice, troubleshooting, and equipment repair for electronic equipment on the ALS experiment floor.

Equipment Pool
A supply of miscellaneous, vacuum, and electronics equipment is available to ALS users on a short-term loan basis (30 days or less). For a list of available equipment and contact information for borrowing items, see ALS Equipment Pool.

Machine Shop (Building 10, Room 111; Ext. 7065)
The Machine Shop is open from 7:00 a.m-4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday; after-hours access is available to trained users. All users must complete a 30-45 minute safety orientation before using the machines. To arrange an orientation, call Wayne Oglesby (ext. 5142) during shop hours. Qualified users may use the machine shop on a walk-in basis during its regular hours. During off hours, check with the Control Room (Building 80, Room 140; ext. 4969) to get access. At least two people must be in the machine shop when equipment is being used during off hours; users are required to bring along a second person for safety.

Storage
Storage at the ALS is very limited. Please bring the smallest amounts possible of necessary materials. Storage of items not in use, including shipping cartons, on the ALS experiment floor in Building 6 is not permitted. User offices may be used for storage within safe limits.

Liquid chemical storage (Building 10, Room 104). All containers must be clearly labeled with the user's name and contents.

Gas storage (Building 10, Room 100). All gases intended for experimental use must be listed on the Experiment Form and approved by the ALS before an experiment begins. All stored gases must be clearly labeled with the user's name and contents. For information about the proper storage and use of pressurized gases, consult ALS User Advisory No. 15, The Use of Toxic and Corrosive Gases at ALS Endstations.

Short-term, on-site storage. There is some additional storage space for materials and equipment on the first floor of Building 7. Contact Gary Giangrasso (ext. 4494) or the Beamline Coordination Section Leader (ext.5527 or 7464) for more information.

Long-term, off-site storage. Long-term storage of equipment and materials is available off-site in Bldg. 903. Call the Central Receiving Warehouse (ext. 4935) for storage information and to get a Request for Storage form.

Survey and Alignment
Members of the ALS Survey and Alignment group are available to assist users in aligning their experiment and endstation equipment. In most cases, the survey crew already has the coordinates of the beamline axes so they can quickly align the experiment endstation with the photon beam. In cases where an endstation has not been marked or "fiducialized" with survey targets, inlet and outlet flanges can often be used to align equipment.

ALS survey help is available weekdays; contact the Beamline Coordination Section Leader (ext. 5527 or 7464) or lead surveyor Richard DeMarco (ext. 6320) to arrange for assistance.
Note: Alignment assistance may be limited on shutdown Mondays, due to accelerator commitments.
