After-Hours Access to the ALS

All new users are required to register with the ALS User Services Office and take safety training before they can receive the ID Proximity Access Card which permits entry to the ALS experiment floor and storage areas. The ALS User Services Office, located on the mezzanine in Building 6 (the ALS) is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. New user registration and safety training is done on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon, and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. only; new users arriving at the ALS outside these hours will be given safety training and temporary access to the ALS by the Operations Coordinator or Control Room Operator on duty.

To receive access to the ALS after-hours or on weekends, users must ensure that the following documents and training are completed:

1. One Week Prior to Coming to the ALS

Submit a completed ALS Participating Guest Information Form; you will automatically receive a registration submission number when the form is submitted

Notify the ALS User Services Office by email of the day and approximate time of your arrival. Include your registration submission number so all your paperwork will be ready for you when you arrive.

2. Upon Arriving at Berkeley Lab and the ALS

Stop at the Blackberry Gate (main entrance to Berkeley Lab) and identify yourself as an ALS user; the security guard will direct you to the ALS.

Go to the ALS(Building 6) lobby and call the Control Room (ext. 4969) or a Beamline Coordinator (ext. 7464). There is an onsite telephone on the wall at the back of the lobby. A coordinator or operator will assist you in completing the safety and registration requirements for access to the ALS. The requirements include:

Proof of health insurance coverage.

New users who are not U.S. citizens must also provide a valid passport, an I-94, an applicable visa and all relevant supporting documents (see Documents for Foreign Nationals).

The following safety forms and training must be completed before a temporary ID Proximity Access Card, required for access to the ALS experiment floor, storage, and supply areas, is issued:

  • View the safety video "Photons to Users: Safety at the Advanced Light Source" (15 min).

  • Read and/or sign:
ALS Procedure HP 02-01: Access to the ALS (Building 6)
    ALS Radiation Awareness Training Form
Berkeley Lab General Employee Radiation Training (GERT)
    Integrated Safety Management Handbook
    Training Documentation Sheet/Enrollment List Form.

New users will have to go to the User Services Office the next working day to complete the registration process and to receive a permanent ID Proximity Access Card.
Note: The temporary card will be deactivated by noon of the next working day and must be returned to the ALS Control Room.

Parking

Parking permits will be issued by the User Services Office, upon request, to eligible ALS users after their registration is completed. Reservations for parking after-hours or on weekends are not required, however a one-day permit must be obtained at the Berkeley Lab Main Gate.

Finding a parking space at Berkeley Lab can be very difficult. Users are strongly encouraged to use public transit and Berkeley Lab shuttles whenever possible; see Directions, Maps for schedules and routes.
