Registration

Before beginning work at the ALS, all users must register with the ALS User Services Office, complete required safety training, and obtain a Berkeley Lab ID Proximity Access Card. The entire registration process can be completed in less than 30 minutes at the User Services Office by following the steps outlined below.

The ALS User Services Office is located on the mezzanine in Building 6 (the ALS). The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. New user registration is done on weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon, and from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. only; users arriving outside these hours should consult After-Hours Access to the ALS for information about temporary access to the facility.

Important Notice: Owing to increased security practices at Berkeley Lab, all visiting researchers and students must present photo identification, and a document confirming that they will be working at the ALS, to security personnel at the Lab's Blackberry Gate entrance. See the LBNL Security Update Web page for additional information about security procedures and access to Berkeley Lab.

Steps for Quick Registration

1. One Week Prior to Coming to the ALS

Submit a completed ALS Participating Guest Information Form; you will automatically receive a registration submission number when the form is submitted.

Notify the ALS User Services Office by email of the day and approximate time of your arrival. Include your registration submission number so all your paperwork will be ready for you when you arrive.

New users who are the Principal Investigator or the Experimenter in Charge for a scientific program must ensure that a User Agreement between Berkeley Lab and the user's home institution has been established before work begins at the ALS.

Go to the ALS User Services Office in Building 6 to complete registration.

Provide proof of health insurance coverage.

New users who are not U.S. citizens must also provide the following documents:

  • Passport
Passport must show issue and expiration date, passport number, and photo.
  • I-94 (front and back)
The I-94 is placed in your passport by the Immigration and Naturalization (INS) officer when you enter the U.S.
  • Applicable visa and all relevant supporting documents (see Documents for Foreign Nationals).

Read and sign the University of California Patent Acknowledgment Form.

The following safety forms and training must be completed before an ID Proximity Access Card, required for access to the ALS experiment floor and storage areas, is issued:

  • View the safety video "Photons to Users: Safety at the Advanced Light Source" (15 min).

  • Read and/or sign:
ALS Procedure HP 02-01: Access to the ALS (Building 6)
    ALS Radiation Awareness Training Form
Berkeley Lab General Employee Radiation Training (GERT)
    Integrated Safety Management Handbook
    Training Documentation Sheet/Enrollment List Form.

Parking

Parking at Berkeley Lab and the ALS is by permit only. Signs in each parking lot designate the types of permit required for that area. Cars parked in no-parking areas or reserved spaces without appropriate permits may be cited or towed.

Parking permits will be issued by the User Services Office, upon request, to eligible ALS users after their registration is completed. Reservations for parking after-hours or on weekends are not required, however a one-day permit must be obtained at the Berkeley Lab Main Gate.

Finding a parking space at Berkeley Lab can be very difficult. Users are strongly encouraged to use the Berkeley Lab shuttles whenever possible (see Directions, Maps).
