Box 23-166, Taipei, 10617, Taiwan, ROC. Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an important reaction occurring at the cathode surface of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Nevertheless, the slow reaction rate is the main cause for the low performance of these fuel cells. Platinum is the well-known cathode electrocatalyst because of its high performance toward the ORR. However, recent studies have shown that Pt electrocatalyst is not stable under operating conditions of the PEMFCs due to the Pt dissolution caused by the surface oxide formation. On the other hand, Platinum is so expensive that it impedes commercialization of PEMFCs. Alloying is one of the most effective ways to solve the problem of improving the ORR activity and reducing the cost over the well-known but expensive Pt. Among many alloys that have been proposed PdCo alloy appeared as the best candidate, as it has not only higher activity but also higher stability. However, the information on its performance upon varying the Co content is not yet clear. Details of our most recent results on the ORR reactivity of PdCo alloy upon the Co content will be reported at the conference. / Acknowledgement.
