Abstract | The Josephson, quantum Hall, and single electron tunnelling effects are hallmarks of metrology. They are playing the key role in electrical, temperature, light and mass standards. The development of a microscopic description that unifies these effects is of crucial importance not only for the establishment of standards at the highest levels of accuracy, but also for designing new nanoscale devices. I will describe such a recently developed theory and its applications in designing a quantum standard of the electric current and a single magnetic molecule detection device. Global demand for these measurement capabilities is driven by the miniaturization trend in electronics and the emergence of quantum technologies. |
