ICTP and Vietnamese Science: Celebrating 60 Years of Cooperation and Shaping the Future

The workshop "ICTP and Vietnamese Science: Celebrating 60 Years of Cooperation and Shaping the Future" was held in Hanoi in November 2024.

On the occasion of its 60th anniversary, from November 29 to 30, 2024, in Hanoi, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) solemnly organized the event titled “The Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics and Vietnamese Science: Celebrating 60 Years of Cooperation and Building the Future”, in collaboration with two UNESCO Category 2 Centres — the International Centre for Mathematical Research and Training and the International Centre for Physics under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST).

This event served as an opportunity for Vietnamese alumni, scientists, and policymakers to reflect on the important contributions of ICTP to Vietnam’s scientific development over the past 60 years, while also opening up promising prospects for future collaboration.

ICTP has a proud history of collaboration with the Vietnamese scientific community. The Centre has provided crucial support for many Vietnamese scientists in developing and maintaining their research careers. Over the years, ICTP has supported more than 1,500 Vietnamese scientists in attending its conferences, workshops, and training programs. Many Vietnamese physicists and mathematicians have participated as Associates, postdoctoral researchers, and trainees under the “Federation Scheme” exchange program, and especially through the ICTP Diploma Programme.

It can be said that during the 1980s and 1990s, ICTP was one of the very few "windows to the world" for Vietnamese scientists. ICTP played a vital role in nurturing young Vietnamese scientists and acted as a bridge connecting them to international scientific networks and research collaborations with scientists from around the globe. This significantly contributed to the development and global integration of Vietnamese science. In particular, with the recent establishment of two UNESCO Category 2 Centres — the International Centre for Mathematical Research and Training and the International Centre for Physics under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) — the collaboration between ICTP and the Vietnamese scientific community has been further strengthened and deepened.
