Workshop and Panel Discussion on “Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development” in Celebration of Vietnam Science and Technology Day

In celebration of Vietnam Science and Technology Day (May 18), the International Centre of Physics (ICP) – Institute of Physics, in collaboration with the International Center for Research and Postgraduate Training in Mathematics (ICRTMCS) – Institute of Mathematics, is organizing a Workshop and Panel Discussion themed “Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development.”

The event will take place at 8:30 AM on Friday, May 16, 2025, at the Nguyen Van Hieu Auditorium, 8th Floor, Institute of Physics, 10 Dao Tan Street, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi.
The program will feature invited talks and panel discussions highlighting the crucial role of fundamental sciences—particularly physics and mathematics—in solving global challenges and advancing sustainable development. The event aims to connect researchers, educators, students, and policy stakeholders in an open and interdisciplinary dialogue.

Among the distinguished speakers, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Thi Thanh Nga, Director General of the Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Climate Change, will present a report addressing the role of basic sciences in understanding and responding to climate change challenges. Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doan Dinh Phuong from the Institute of Materials Science will deliver a featured lecture on “Hydrogen – The Energy of the Future,” providing scientific insights into hydrogen energy technologies and their potential to support the global transition to sustainable energy systems.

In addition, the workshop will include sessions discussing the integration of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into graduate research, the role of fundamental sciences in environmental protection, and the importance of science education and outreach for future generations.

This event offers a valuable opportunity to emphasize the enduring relevance of basic sciences in achieving a sustainable and equitable future. Scientists, lecturers, students, and all interested individuals are warmly invited to attend and contribute to the dialogue.
