Application of AI, IoT, and Automation Combined with Physics-Chemistry-Biology Technologies in Water Supply and Wastewater Treatment Systems
To discuss the current situation and technological solutions for industrial and domestic wastewater treatment, on November 11, 2021, the International Center for Physics (under UNESCO’s patronage) and the Institute of Physics co-organized a scientific seminar titled “Application of AI, IoT, Automation Combined with Physics-Chemistry-Biology Technologies in Water Supply and Wastewater Treatment Systems.”

The seminar was attended by Prof. Dr. Phan Tiến Dũng, Head of the Technology Application and Deployment Department, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology; Dr. Đỗ Hoàng Tùng, Dr. Ngô Mạnh Tiến, International Center for Physics – Institute of Physics; Mr. Trương Hồng Thanh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Astec Group; as well as researchers and representatives from enterprises.
At the seminar, participants discussed and proposed directions for research collaboration and practical applications of artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and automation technologies combined with Physics–Chemistry–Biology methods. These approaches aim to improve energy efficiency, reduce the consumption of treatment chemicals, ensure the quality of treated wastewater, and minimize dependence on operational staff and experts. The goal is to align with the approach of next-generation, Industry 4.0-standard modern water treatment systems around the world.
Also at the seminar, Dr. Phạm Ngọc Minh from the Institute of Information Technology (IoT), Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), introduced integrated IoT and SCADA systems that automate and smarten water treatment processes. One highlight was the SCADA monitoring and control system for the Cầu Nguyệt Water Plant—one of the major projects successfully designed and implemented in 2010 by IT Institute experts in collaboration with Astec Group, based on technologies from leading global companies such as Siemens and ABB.In 2017, the Institute also partnered with VESA Company to design and implement a decentralized wastewater treatment technology, one of the key projects prepared for the APEC 2017 Summit in Da Nang. Additionally, the automatic wastewater monitoring system based on IoT technology allows managers and operators to monitor water quality measurement data online via the internet, using both web interfaces and Android mobile applications.

At each topic, participants engaged in lively, open, and constructive discussions and raised various questions. The seminar concluded with the hope of providing valuable interdisciplinary insights, fostering collaboration between scientists and businesses. These collaborations aim to produce innovative research outcomes and promote the broader application of new technologies, thereby enhancing the efficiency and quality of current water treatment systems in Vietnam, aligning with the global trend toward next-generation Industry 4.0 water treatment solutions.
