Workshop and Exhibition on the Applications of Nuclear Physics in Current Scientific and Technological Fields

On the morning of October 27, 2022, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), Dubna, co-organized a workshop and exhibition introducing JINR’s research activities, the contributions of Vietnamese scientists working at JINR, and especially the potential applications of nuclear physics in various scientific and technological fields such as health sciences, materials science, environmental science, and new materials technology.

The program featured presentations from Dr. Lê Quỳnh Liên, Head of the Department of International Cooperation, VAST; Assoc. Prof. Đinh Văn Trung, Director of the Institute of Physics, VAST; Dr. Nguyễn Xuân Anh, Director of the Institute of Geophysics, VAST; Assoc. Prof. Trần Đình Phong, Vice President of the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi, VAST; Prof. Boris Sharkov, Director for Development with Scientific Partners at JINR; Dr. Dmitry Kamanin, Head of International Cooperation Department at JINR; Dr. Valery Shvetsov, Director of the Frank Laboratory of Neutron Physics; Dr. Alexander Verkheev, Deputy Director of the JINR University Center; Lương Bá Vinh, and other scientists currently working at JINR.

Dr. Lê Quỳnh Liên, Head of the Department of International Cooperation at VAST, introduced Vietnam’s activities and achievements at JINR, emphasizing the country's overall desire — and VAST’s in particular — to further expand collaboration with JINR as part of its research development strategy, especially in high-level scientific research.

Assoc. Prof. Đinh Văn Trung (Director of the Institute of Physics), Dr. Nguyễn Xuân Anh (Director of the Institute of Geophysics), and Assoc. Prof. Trần Đình Phong (Vice President of the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi) also expressed their aspirations to deepen high-quality training and research cooperation with JINR. The delegates shared their views on the significant potential of nuclear physics in various scientific and technological fields. Strengthening the Vietnamese research team at JINR — particularly through the involvement of young researchers from diverse disciplines — will help establish a strong bridge for research collaboration between JINR, VAST, and other Vietnamese research and educational institutions.

On the sidelines of the workshop, an exhibition showcasing JINR’s prominent activities and achievements was also held on October 27, 2022, at USTH. At the event, participants were introduced to and experienced several ongoing research projects at JINR through virtual reality (VR) technology. These included the NICA accelerator complex (Russia’s collider), the SuperHeavy Element Factory, and the BAIKAL-GVD Neutrino Telescope. With the support of VR technology, JINR's laboratories were vividly brought to life, allowing delegates to feel as though they were directly participating in real scientific experiments.
