Asian Network School and Workshop on Complex Condensed Matter Systems Held in Hanoi, November 2023

The School and Workshop on Complex Condensed Matter Systems, under the framework of the Asian Network on Condensed Matter, Complex Systems, and Statistical Physics, took place from November 6 to 10, 2023, at the newly renovated headquarters of the Institute of Physics (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) on Đào Tấn Street, Hanoi.

The Asian Network on Condensed Matter, Complex Systems, and Statistical Physics is an initiative of the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, in collaboration with key institutions in the Asia-Pacific region, including: the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP, Pohang, Korea), the Center for Theoretical Physics of Complex Systems (Institute for Basic Science, Daejeon, Korea), the Center for Theoretical Physics (Institute of Physics, Hanoi, Vietnam), the National Institute of Physics (University of the Philippines, Diliman), the School of Physics (Suranaree University of Technology, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand), and other regional research centers. The network aims to bring together researchers across the Asia-Pacific to collaborate and develop research in condensed matter physics, complex systems, and statistical physics, as well as train the next generation of scientists and technologists.

The Asian Network has successfully organized and received high praise for its previous schools and workshops, including events held in 2017 at the Institute of Physics (Hanoi), in 2018 at Suranaree University of Technology (Thailand), and in 2019 at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. After a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Network resumed its activities, and this school and workshop in Hanoi marked the first event hosted in the ASEAN region post-pandemic.

The 2023 event was co-sponsored by the International Center for Physics (Institute of Physics, Hanoi), ICTP (Trieste), APCTP (Pohang), and the Center for Theoretical Physics of Complex Systems (Daejeon). It attracted more than 100 participants from various countries including South Korea, Australia, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Many of the attendees were students, PhD candidates, and early-career researchers.

The program featured ten two-hour lectures delivered by leading experts in the field, eleven scientific research talks, and thirty-four poster presentations. Topics covered included topological properties of materials, flat-band systems, interdisciplinary research methods bridging high-energy physics and complex condensed matter systems, and developments in density functional theory for excited-state energy calculations. These lectures and presentations addressed some of the most cutting-edge topics in current global research and will be made available on the event’s official website: iop.vast.vn/asian/2023.

In addition to academic activities, the event also included a cultural excursion to Bút Tháp Pagoda, Dâu Pagoda, and Đông Hồ folk painting village, introducing participants to Vietnam's first Buddhist center and offering insights into the country’s unique cultural heritage.
