Directions from the East Bay:

Why this isn't easy.

Here's how to reach UCSF by car if you are coming from the East Bay...

Cross the Bay Bridge and follow the signs to Hwy 101 north (Golden Gate Bridge). Get off at the 9th Street exit. Get into one of the left two lanes of 9th so after you cross Market Street (a wide street that runs diagonally) you are forced to turn left onto Hayes. Then get into one of the left two lanes of Hayes, proceed across Van Ness Avenue (a wide, divided street), and then turn left on Gough St. One block later, turn right on Fell St.

Fell St. is a one way street that goes up and over a large hill. Stay on Fell for 18 blocks or so. When you begin to see lots of grass and trees on your left (the "panhandle" of Golden Gate [GG] park) get over into the rightmost lane. When you get to Stanyan St., Fell will curve slightly to the left as it enters GG park. You want to turn LEFT on Stanyan, but you do this by staying to the RIGHT and going straight onto a little access road while the rest of the traffic curves left. From here you can turn left. This may sound complicated, but it's really not. There are several signs along the way that say ``University of California San Francisco''; DO NOT be misled by the signs that say ``University of San Francisco'', as it's a very different place.

So, now that you're going south on Stanyan St., proceed 5 stop lights to Parnassus Ave. and turn right. Go up a another hill and note several multistory buildings on both sides of the street. This is UCSF. There is an underground parking ramp on the right, just before a large glass-enclosed clock tower. Park and then take an elevator up to the top level (labeled ``I'' or ``J'', depending on which bank of elevators you're on). Exit the elevator and cross Parnassus Avenue. Now follow the directions entitled ``Once you're on campus...''
