Organizing our tasks and coordinating large databases, shared by several people
is not easy. We use MolSoft's Unite which is a fully
functional and portable business intranet system, requiring only a browser,
MySQL(free), and BEE, the latest development in the ICM
language.
Background Originally, the MolSoft Intranet was designed for use in the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF), a new organization founded for the purpose of using the power of computational biology to process the vast amounts of information being generated by the biotechnology industry (including themselves!). The goal was to have an integrated system that would use the power of gigantic clusters (250 Alpha processors, 400 Intel processors),and a 32 processor SGI, with the information generated from the human genome project to determine the function of then estimated 100,000 human genes. Not a small task!
In this situation, users of the system needed to have access to large databases of information, have the ability to process that information, and view the resulting data- all from the web in a secure manner. And so the MolSoft Intranet was born and then implemented in our everyday tasks.
