General ALS Publications

See ALS Publications for information about requesting printed copies. Some of the publications listed below are also available as PDF files. To view these documents, you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. See Adobe's Acrobat Reader Web page to download this free software. Tools to make PDFs more accessible to people with visual disabilities are available at access.adobe.com.

  1. "X-Ray Data Booklet"
Published jointly by the Center for X-Ray Optics and the ALS, this handy book offers data relating to the x-ray properties of elements, synchrotron radiation, scattering processes, optics, and other practical information.

  2. "Advanced Light Source Activity Report"
The Activity Report illustrates the depth and breadth of the ALS scientific program with a selection of research results. The report also summarizes operations and ongoing R&D, highlights educational outreach efforts and special events, and provides a reference for the beamlines scheduled for completion in the near future. Printed copies of the 1996/97 (LBNL-40766), 1997/98 (LBNL-43078), 1999 (LBNL-45613), 2000 (LBNL-47783), and 2001 (LBNL-49628) reports are available. These volumes are also available as PDF files. Acrobat Reader version 4.0, with the PDF Viewer plugin, is highly recommended, as it will allow downloading of one page at a time.

  3. "Advanced Light Source Compendium of User Abstracts and Technical Reports"
The Compendium contains users' scientific abstracts on their research during the year; it is available on CD for years from 1998 to the present while supplies last. Printed copies were produced for the years 1993-96 (LBNL-39981), 1997 (LBNL-41658), and 1998(LBNL-43431). To view the Compendium contents (from 1997 to the present) online, see the Compendium Web site.

  4. "The Atomic and Molecular Facility on Beamline 10.0.1," LBL PUB-832.
A guide to Beamline 10's facilities for general users studying atomic and molecular physics, available only as a PDF file (506K).

  5. "World Class Protein Crystallography: the Macromolecular Crystallography Facility at the Advanced Light Source," LBL PUB-817. A guide to the facilities and capabilities of the MCF, available only as a PDF file (327K).

  6. "Workshop on Scientific Directions at the Advanced Light Source," LBNL-42014. Summary and reports of the working groups from the Scientific Directions at the Advanced Light Source workshop, held at the ALS on March 23-25, 1998. This report identifies the elements of the most compelling scientific program for the ALS and makes recommendations for a roadmap to implement that program. Printed copies are available while supplies last.

  7. ALSNews. This biweekly electronic newsletter, available on the Web or by email, keeps users and other interested parties informed about developments at the ALS: scientific results, machine operations, user services and more.

  8. "Soft X-Ray Spectromicroscopy: Materials Characterization on a Microscale," PUB-786. A brochure introducing soft x-ray spectroscopy, microscopy, and their combination in spectromicroscopy for spatially resolved materials analysis.

  9. General Information Data Sheets. These printed information sheets present general data about the ALS storage ring and beamlines. They are also available as PDF files from the links below.

A Third-Generation, Low-Emittance Storage Ring for High Brightness

Current and Planned Beamlines for Users Through 2002

  10. "Advanced Light Source Safety Handbook," LBL PUB-745.

  11. "Advanced Light Source Beamline Design Guide: Information for Beamline Designers, Rev. 2," LBL PUB-3114. A guide for beamline and endstation designers.

  12. "Advanced Light Source Integrated Safety Management Plan, 2001" Safety management policy defining principles and core work functions for the ALS Division.
