The ALS Fourier-Transform Soft X-ray Spectrometer (FTSX)

E.J.Moler, S.Burke, M.R.Howells, Z.Hussain, S.Locklin, J.Spring Beamline 9.3.2

All design choices are driven by:

  • The desired resolution
  • The nominal photon wavelength

Design Parameters

Energy/Wavelength Range Design Goal 40-120 eV; 30-10 nm
Resolution Design Goal
Demonstrated (preliminary)
 65  µeV (Resolving Power = 106 at 65 eV)
250 µeV

neon discharge spectrum

Figure 1. Neon Discharge Spectrum. Visible lines are used for coarse alignment of the beamsplitters to each other and to the mirrors.  The resolution, which is independant of wavelength, is demonstrated by this spectrum to be within a factor of 4 of the design goal.  A further factor of 2 is expected to be gained in the final alignment run.

A detailed list of the technical specifications is given here.
