Institute of Physics, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Hanoi 100000, Vietnam Abstract The interplay between the spin-orbit coupling and an external magnetic field in the Lieb lattice is studied. The electron structure of the tight-binding model on the Lieb lattice features both the flat and the Dirac linearly dispersing bands. The spin-orbit coupling can generates a topological insulating state, while the magnetic field often breaks the topology. As a result of the interplay, a selective spin component insulating occurs.
