AbstractThe last decade witnesses many noticeable progresses in physics. It includes the further and deeper development of the so-called Bloch theory of the energy band structure of electrons in solids. This theory allows to explain clearly not only typical effects such as the integer quantum Hall effect, but also establish a novel phase of matter, the topological insulating. Remarkably, the novel theory is the connection and combination of much of knowledge in various fields of modern physics and mathematics. It is therefore not straightforward to beginners to learn and to touch special topics of research in the novel field of topological insulators. Topology is a concept introduced by mathematicians to construct basic mathematical structures. It actually has entered into many modern physical theories, for example, the gauge field Yang-Mill theory. It has become a useful and powerful to describe problems involving the global aspects of nature. In this talk, I try to give a synthetic overview of how and why topology and geometry entering in physics. Some essential mathematical concepts will be translated to the physical language. They are then used to highlight and discuss key points in the topological theory of the electronic band structure of solids. A simple, but useful, model is used for the aim of a particular illustration.
