Traceroute Query

Enter an IP address or hostname:
This page provides a gateway to the standard UNIX traceroute program which determines the route across a network taken by packets from one host to another host. In this case, the traceroute will start from this server, located at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) campus. It will display the path taken to reach the host or IP address you have listed in the box above.

You can use this utility to verify connectivity of a host and determine how the host is connected to the Internet. You can also determine the path taken from UCSF to the specified host. This may help you, for example, to determine where packet loss may be occurring when you attempt to connect to hosts on the UCSF campus. It may also help you to determine whether routing difficulties, either in the Internet or within the UCSF campus network, may explain problems connecting to hosts on the UCSF campus.

This is an experimental server. If you have any questions or comments about its functionality, feel free to send electronic mail to the address listed below and we will attempt to get back to you shortly.

The script that drives this page was originally written by folks at Carnegie Mellon University, and has been shamelessly modified for use at UCSF by tef@cgl.ucsf.edu.
