Finding genes in GDB - new and improved!

Both HUGO and public cytogenetic map locations are now available, along with access to protein products, and the option to view maps containing your gene of interest! See below for details.....

To find detailed information on your favorite gene in the human Genome Database (GDB). Access "Search by Gene Name or Symbol" from the GDB homepage (http://gdbwww.gdb.org/).

Enter the gene name or symbol - press submit!

1. Your results are returned in a table that now includes both Human Genome Organization (HUGO) approved and publicly editable (Public) cytogenetic map locations. With most genes, the HUGO and Public locations are identical. In some cases however, researchers may have data that supports differing locations for a gene. In these cases the HUGO and Public locations will reflect this. There may also be more than one cytogenetic location for a gene on the Public map, as GDB is now publicly editable and able to display any and all locations entered by registered users.

2. Choose "View Maps Containing this Gene" and you will be able to choose from any available map containing your gene.

3. To view protein products (and eventually RNA products) of genes, choose "Gene Products" and follow the hyperlinks to detailed protein entries which contain links to the Enzyme Commission (EC) database of enzyme function, protein sequence links to the Protein Identification Resource (PIR) and links to protein structure databases.

4. Choose the "Other Links" category to view links to external databases such as individual gene mutation databases and much more!
