HUMAN GENOME TEACHER NETWORKING PROJECT

GENETICS EDUCATION CENTER, KANSAS CITY

The Genetics Education Center, University of Kansas Medical Center seeks middle and secondary science teachers to participate in the Human Genome Teacher Networking Project beginning June 18 - 24, 1995 in Kansas City. The project, focusing on the applications of new genetic biotechnology, is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, Human Genome Research Program / Ethical, Legal and Social Implications.

Participation requires a commitment for all four phases over two school years:
Phase I 1st Workshop (1 week, June)
Phase II Classroom Use of Materials (school year)
Phase III 2nd Workshop (1 week, June)
Phase IV Dissemination and Networking (school year)
This project updates participants on applications of the Human Genome Project, including biotechnology, genetic screening, genetic testing, public policy issues, ethical and legal issues, and social implications through didactic interactions with experts and families affected by genetic conditions. The project will provide information on careers in human genetics, genetic resources, classroom curriculum materials, and will link teachers with genetic professionals through computer networks.

Participants selected for the project will receive funds for the majority of their travel, and funds for accommodations, meals and teaching materials.

ALL interested educators are solicited, especially those from the following states: AL, AK, AR, CA, CO, DE, FL, GA, HI, ID, IA, MD, MA, MS, MT, NV, NH, NM, NY, NC, ND, PA, SC, SD, TN, UT, WV, WI, WY.
