Élan not only records research activities, but also streamlines the tasks themselves. Data can be quickly stored, searched, and reused; routine calculations are automated; tasks can be initiated with a single click; and, when the experiment is complete, a hardcopy report from Élan can be produced to satisfy intellectual property requirements. Powered by industry-standard technology from Oracle, Microsoft, and MDL, Élan is the ideal tool for supporting both small and large-scale research efforts. In fact, Élan's reliance on standards makes it easy for scientists to use and IT staffs to adapt and reconfigure to meet the needs of individual scientists and their organizations. Élan's standardized template—a Microsoft Word document—makes data entry easy. Scientists enter in experimental details such as the reaction, the apparatus, methods, and results. Élan also automatically calculates molecular weights and formulas from reactions and can scale reactions after changes have been made. But more importantly, scientists can search for and retrieve past experimental procedures. Once past procedures have been found, they can then copy reactions and other experimental details from existing experiments, or simply open and rename an existing experiment in its entirety.
