ProgrammeL.7.2 -- Lecture Date: Wednesday, 22 November 2017> Time: 10:30 - 11:30> Topological phases in condensed matter and photonicsDaniel Leykam IBS PCS The discovery of topological phases of matter has generated excitement throughout physics. In the past decade condensed matter physicists have used the topological classification of electronic band structures to discover a variety of "topological insulators," materials that are insulating in their bulk but have "topologically protected" conducting states on their boundaries. My lectures will cover the development of this topological band theory from the quantum Hall effect to topological insulators and semimetals, as well as applications of these ideas to photonics.
