A brief introduction to Topology and Geometry in the study of Electronic structure in Crystalline materials

Van-Nam Do

Phenikaa University, Hanoi, Vietnam

The objective of this lecture is to provide a concise overview of the essential mathematical foundations and showcase the practical application of topological theories in the analysis of the electronic structure of crystalline materials. By utilizing the solution to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model for one-dimensional electronic lattices, we aim to introduce fundamental mathematical concepts in a way that is accessible to researchers who may not be extensively familiar with advanced mathematics. During this presentation, we will illustrate how geometric principles can be employed to describe and analyze sets of quantum states for electrons in materials. In the context of classifying electronic phases, we emphasize the pivotal role of symmetries and band inversion phenomena as both necessary and sufficient conditions for governing a topological nontrivial electronic phase.
