Introduction to Toric code from the higher form symmetry perspective

Dung Nguyen Xuan

Center for Theoretical Physics of Complex Systems, Institute for Basic Science, Daejeon, Korea

It was once thought that explaining topological phase transitions within the Ginzburg-Landau formalism of spontaneous symmetry breaking was impossible. These transitions are different from conventional phase transitions, such as ferromagnetism, which are characterized by local order parameters. However, recent research now suggests that topological phase transitions are actually related to the spontaneous breaking of higher-order symmetries. In this presentation, I will introduce the concept of higher-order symmetries and the expanded Ginzburg-Landau framework, using the Toric code as an example to illustrate these ideas.
