Trapped Hard-Core Bosons in Flatband Cross-Stitch Lattices

We investigate the thermalization behavior of one- and two-dimensional cross-stitch lattices containing hard-core bosons with on-site interactions. One of our key findings is that the groundstate energy is only influenced by the compact localized states. The formation of the Wigner crystal occurs when the compact localized states are fully occupied, while the band-insulating phase emerges when the lattice sites are fully filled. In cases where the lattice is partially filled with the compact localized states and with the dimer sites, a mixture of both phases is observed. Moreover, when a closed barrier made of the compact localized states is present in both the one- and two-dimensional cross-stitch lattices, hard-core bosons inside the barrier become physically trapped in the loop due to the significant influence of the groundstate. Such violation of weak thermalization gives rise to the existence of non-ergodic excited states, a phenomenon closely linked to the Hilbert space fragmentation, where compact localized states play a pivotal role.
