Self-propelled particles are crucial components for single drug delivery systems, lab-on-chip devices, and modeling non-equilibrium systems, among others. For instance, a metal-coated Janus particle under light illumination can self-propel via self-thermophoresis. Regardless, there is still limited understanding of how the metallic Janus particle responds to a harmonic optical trap. Here, we show experiments on the optical trapping of metal-coated Janus particles in an optical point trap. We observed a supernova-like explosion on the trajectories of the Janus particle at increasing laser power. We conjecture that such behavior is due to the competition between heating and trapping effects.
