Structured light: generation, detection and application

One of the earlier impressions in the field of optics is that it deals mostly with plane waves, rays, point sources, and smooth wavefronts. However, around 30 years ago, the idea of structured light – a customized light that differs from these ideal cases, entered the field of optical research and introduced new physics and advanced applications. Structured light refers to the tailoring or shaping of light in all its degrees of freedom (DOFs), spatial and temporal, to achieve complex optical fields. In this proposal, we aim to present new advances in the field of structured light. We focus on the three aspects involving structured light– its generation, its detection and new application. We believe that our research would make significant contributions to the development and applications of structured light such as in metrology, material characterization, and astrometry.
