The activity consists of two parts:

Public part (for general audience, no pre-registration needed):

  • Public lecture by Takaaki Kajita (2015 Nobel laureate in physics) (brief CV)
Takaaki Kajita is the Special University Professor at the University of Tokyo, and Director of the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research (ICRR). Kajita received his Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo School of Science in 1986. In 1998, at the Neutrino International Conference held in Takayama, Gifu, he showed the analysis results which provided strong evidence for atmospheric neutrino oscillations In 2015 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for his role in discovering atmospheric neutrino oscillations.

    Title: Neutrino oscillations (see abstract)

    ABSTRACT

Neutrinos are elementary particles which are very difficult to observe. They have been assumed to have no mass. It was predicted that, if they had masses, they could change their type while they fly. This phenomenon is called neutrino oscillations. Neutrino oscillations was discovered by deep underground neutrino experiments. I will describe this discovery of neutrino oscillations. The implications of the discovery of the neutrino oscillations and the small neutrino masses will be also described.
